Current PhD Thesis Fellows

#Johannes Braathen

Born in Oslo, Norway, I grew up and did all my studies in France. After undergraduate studies in Physics and Mathematics, I obtained my Masters degree from the Theoretical Physics program at University Pierre and Marie Curie in 2015. I have now started my PhD at Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Hautes Energies, funded by the Fondation CFM pour la Recherche, with additional funding for travels and equipment from Institut Lagrange de Paris. I work under the supervision Mark Goodsell and Pietro Slavich about automating Higgs precision calculations.

The core of my thesis work are Beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories. The Standard Model (SM) is currently the most achieved and accepted theory of subatomic physics, and is globally in very good agreement with experimental data. However, already from the time of its conception, it was known that the Standard Model was not complete, lacking a quantum theory of gravity. More recently, problems have arisen in the description of electroweak and strong interactions by the SM, from different sources: particle colliders, astrophysics, etc. Also, some tensions have appeared between experimental results and theoretical predictions from the SM.

In this context, the properties of the Higgs boson provide one of the best approaches to study and understand the theories beyond the Standard Model, of which one of the main class of candidates is Supersymmetric theories. Automating precise computations of the Higgs boson's properties (mass, production and decay rates, etc.) would help greatly in determining the viability of BSM theories, by comparing theoretical predictions and experimental results, coming for example from the next run of the Large Hadron Collider.
